Introduction to the Museum
The Nanchang August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum is a specialized memorial museum established to commemorate the Nanchang Uprising. It was established in 1956 and officially opened to the public in 1959. In 1961, it was announced by the State Council as one of the first key cultural relic protection units in the country (which includes five revolutionary sites: the former headquarters of the Nanchang Uprising, the former headquarters of He Long, the former headquarters of Ye Ting, the former site of the Zhu De Military Education Group, and Zhu De's former residence). Leaders from the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, such as Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Chen Yi, as well as party and state leaders like Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping, have visited and provided guidance, expressing their deep concern for our museum.
In January 2008, the Nanchang August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum took the lead in opening to the public for free, proposing the concept of "free admission without tickets, and services without discounts," maintaining an annual reception of over 2 million visitors. Since its establishment, the museum has received over 30 million visitors from home and abroad, including over 10 million minors, achieving the goal of "educating people through history, touching people through objects, and attracting people through scenery." At the same time, it has received a series of honors, including "National Civilized Unit," "National First-Class Museum," "National AAAA Tourist Attraction," "National Advanced Collective for Red Tourism Work," "Top Ten Classic Red Tourist Attractions in China," and the first batch of "Patriotic Education Demonstration Bases" and "National Defense Education Demonstration Bases."
Under the correct leadership of the relevant higher authorities, our museum focuses on the three main functions of collection, exhibition, and education, fully utilizing the resource advantages of the red revolutionary scenic area, actively carrying out patriotic education and revolutionary tradition education, and striving to become an important position for cultivating and practicing the core socialist values.
With exhibitions as the main body, we enrich the forms of cultural relics. After the completion of the renovation and expansion project in 2007, the exhibition content mainly includes: the Nanchang Uprising, the glorious history of the People's Army, and the restoration of the former sites. Among them, the exhibition "Nanchang Uprising" won the highest award in the Chinese museum exhibition field—the "Excellence Award" in the selection of the top ten exhibition displays in national museums. In 2014, our museum upgraded its basic exhibition again, adding the eighth unit "Dream of a Strong Army," which mainly showcases Xi Jinping's important discussions and achievements on national defense and military construction since the 18th National Congress, and updated the exhibitions at various former sites accordingly. At the same time, we regularly introduce 3-4 themed temporary exhibitions each year. For example, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Anti-Japanese War, we introduced the exhibitions "Unyielding Struggle—The History of the 14-Year Anti-Japanese War in Northeast China" and "Great Contributions—China and the World Anti-Fascist War." To support the Party's mass line education practice activities, we introduced the exhibition "For the People, Pragmatic, and Clean—Model of Party Conduct Zhou Enlai." We launched original exhibitions such as "The Great Beginning—The Mobile Exhibition of the Nanchang Uprising" and "Exhibition of Generals and Marshals Emerging from the Nanchang Uprising," which toured nationwide and received widespread acclaim.
Using activities as a carrier, we broaden the scope of publicity and education services. Our museum actively conducts activities such as moral lectures, thrift and savings, smile service month, and good deeds list; establishes model pioneer posts for party members to promote the integrity construction system; actively organizes "I Contribute, I Am Happy" civilized traffic volunteer services, caring for empty-nest elderly, left-behind children, and difficult workers in the community through Lei Feng volunteer service activities; actively advocates civilized tourism activities in the memorial park; and conducts themed activities "Our Festival" during the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival.
Focusing on young people, we innovate educational forms. We have carried out a series of activities such as "Bringing Exhibitions into Classrooms, Telling Stories of Ancestors, Teaching Revolutionary Songs, and Becoming Little Guides." In the past two years, we have cooperated with schools to carry out over 80 themed educational activities, including "Caring for Little Red Army Kids," "Salute! The National Flag of the Republic," "Red Stage—Inter-School PK," "Flowers Blooming in the Sun," "Remembering Revolutionary Martyrs and Always Following the Party," and "Little Voices Conveying Military Spirit"; we have held multiple training sessions for "Little Guide" volunteers, training over 200 young volunteer guides.
Driven by innovation, we independently develop cultural and creative products. To expand the social benefits of the museum and maximize the dissemination of spiritual civilization, our museum has explored, integrated, and revitalized the red cultural resources of the museum, publishing dozens of books and albums such as "August 1st Memory—Stories Behind Cultural Relics," "Nanchang Uprising," "Cradle of the People's Army," "Where the Military Flag Rises," "Deep Focus on the Nanchang Uprising," and "Flapping Military Flags." We have designed and drawn 35 samples of six categories of products, including ceramic travel mugs, commemorative coins, crystal products, retro military pocket watches, DIY weapon puzzles, and PVC keychain luggage tags. We introduced an automatic vending machine for commemorative coins, designing two types each of gold and silver coins, based on our museum's cultural elements, complemented by promotional short films highlighting the "August 1st" spirit, which received widespread praise from visitors.
Taking the opportunity of internet thinking, we are building a digital memorial museum. Our museum has created an APP self-service platform, showcasing the latest dynamic information, cultural relics, exhibition content, and themed activities of the museum in the form of cartoon guides and bilingual audio guides, vividly presenting revolutionary historical and cultural resources; we have introduced an electronic touch message board, allowing visitors to write their visiting experiences through self-photography and handwritten messages. After the message board was put into use, it quickly became popular among visitors, with over 20,000 messages in just three months; since May 2015, our museum has launched the "Double Micro" platform, presenting the latest information of the museum to visitors in real-time and winning over 790 likes through online "micro-interactions"; at the same time, our museum has attempted to upgrade traditional albums, combining static books with audiobooks, collecting and organizing explanatory texts and background music, striving to create a reading album that combines listening and viewing, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the "August 1st" culture while reading.
The Nanchang August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum is rich in historical and red cultural resources, making it an important resource for carrying out patriotic and revolutionary tradition education and cultivating socialist core values. Based on this, our museum will continue to innovate and fully explore existing red cultural resources, creating classic red tourism scenic spots, contributing to the comprehensive development of "red, green, and ancient" tourism in the province, and contributing to the prosperous development of the national red tourism industry in the new era and new stage.
