(2) The course and failure of the Ye-He army's southern expedition
After the Nanchang uprising, the Ye-He army moved from Nanchang, passing through Fuzhou, Ruijin, and Huichang, encountering Qian Dajun's and part of Huang Shaolun's troops, engaging in a fierce battle with them. As a result, although the Nanchang uprising army suffered significant losses, they also achieved great victories. After Huichang, Ye and He did not follow the planned route directly to Xunwu, but instead changed their course, returning to the areas of Tingzhou and Shanghang, then passing through Dapu, heading towards Chaoshan. However, by the time the Ye-He army reached Chaoshan, the enemy forces led by Chen Jitang, Wang Jun, and Huang Shaogou had surrounded them from all sides to attack.
Although the Ye-He army's vanguard arrived in Shantou on September 24, and the Shantou workers' and peasants' army also rose in revolt, by September 30, they were forced to abandon Shantou due to the pressure from the reactionary army and had to make a desperate effort to retreat to Tangkeng to fight. In this final battle, the enemy had 15,000 troops, while our army only had 5,000, and after a fierce day and night of fighting, our army was completely disintegrated. The current situation is that over 1,000 troops from the 25th Division, having remained at Sanheba when they arrived in Shantou, were soon cut off by the enemy and are now retreating towards the Fujian border. After the defeat at the Battle of Tangkeng, Ye Ting was left with only 700 to 800 men retreating to Jizigang, where they scattered. There are still about 2,000 to 3,000 troops from He Long's 20th Army's 12th Division fleeing towards Hailufeng. The political awareness of this group of officers is quite vague, and after leaving the main force, they are completely aimless, even requesting Li Jishen to incorporate them.
