Have you seen the old movie "Heroes and Sons"? Have you heard the songs "My Motherland" and "Ode to Heroes"? These popular and classic artistic works, which have been passed down for over 60 years, all originate from a classic battle during the 70-year Anti-American Aid Korea War—Shangganling. Today, we have Grandpa Xi Shurong sharing his story with us. Grandpa Xi is 93 years old and was originally the commander of the 1st Company of the 1st Battalion of the 6th Division of the 24th Army of the People's Liberation Army. In October 1951, at the age of 24, he crossed the Yalu River at night on a small boat with his troops. As a witness to the Shangganling battle, what was this extraordinarily difficult period like in his eyes?
Have you seen the old movie "Heroic Sons and Daughters"? Have you heard the songs "My Motherland" and "Song of Heroes"? These well-known classic works of art, which have been passed down for over 60 years, all originated from a classic battle during the 70 years of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea — the Battle of Shangganling. Today, we have Grandpa Xi Shurong sharing his story with us. Grandpa Xi is 93 years old and was originally the company commander of the 1st Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Division, 24th Army of the People's Liberation Army. In October 1951, at the age of 24, he crossed the Yalu River at night on a small boat with his troops. As a witness to the Battle of Shangganling, what was this extremely difficult period like in his eyes?

At that time, we were in the cave all day long, with the enemy right above us, on the mountain. We couldn't come out during the day; if we did, their planes would bomb us. The Americans had many cannons and planes, and they bombed us desperately, trying to collapse the tunnels and suffocate us inside. Later, we would come out at night to fight them, launching night attacks. They were afraid of our night raids.
The weather there was very cold, with winter temperatures dropping to minus thirty or forty degrees. The dark and damp tunnels had no water, and we often couldn't get food. Even if there was grain, we didn't dare to easily start a fire to cook. We could only grab a handful of fried noodles to stuff in our mouths and eat some snow. Sometimes we went days without water, only able to save our urine to drink.
One night, when the American military's flares lit up, they dropped dozens of shells, and an entire squad of comrades was sacrificed.
......
As Grandpa Xi recounted the scenes from back then, he shed tears and repeatedly said, "I am lucky; I survived. You young people are fortunate to live in a peaceful era; cherish it!"
At Mount Wusong in Korea, there are two small high grounds — Shangganling. The battle that took place here made it a "sorrowful ridge" for the American military and also became a "watershed" for the world to re-recognize China and the Chinese army.
From October 14 to November 25, 1952, the volunteer soldiers built a steel Great Wall with their flesh and blood, continuously fighting against the "United Nations Forces" for 43 days and nights, repelling 25 assaults by battalion-sized units and 653 assaults by company-sized units, shooting down or damaging 274 aircraft, destroying or damaging 61 large-caliber artillery pieces and 14 tanks, and crushing the offensive of the "United Nations Forces," achieving a victory in defense.
During the 43-day Battle of Shangganling, the "United Nations Forces" fired over 1.9 million shells and dropped more than 5,000 bombs, suffering over 25,000 casualties, yet they still could not cross these two small hills that had been almost flattened by artillery fire. This battle completely dispelled the arrogant spirit of the American military, turning a real tiger into a paper tiger. The Battle of Shangganling also became a classic defensive battle in the history of world warfare.
The victory in the Battle of Shangganling dealt a heavy blow to the enemy. After the battle, the American military never launched an attack on the volunteer army at the battalion level or above again, and the situation in the Korean War stabilized along the 38th parallel. Shangganling became an impregnable defense line, and the volunteer army, with their iron will and fighting spirit, forged the spirit of Shangganling through arduous struggles.
