In the winter of 1924, the Communist Party of China selected a group of party and league members from the Whampoa Military Academy as the backbone to form the National Revolutionary Army's Marshal's Office Armored Vehicle Team (referred to as the Armored Vehicle Team). This was the first armed force led by the Communist Party of China, so what stories lie behind the Armored Vehicle Team?
Zhou Enlai pointed out as early as December 1922: "A truly revolutionary army must be extremely strong and organized. Without a revolutionary army, warlords cannot be defeated." The Communist Party of China began its military work at the Whampoa Military Academy. At that time, after Zhou Enlai served as the director of the political department of the Whampoa Military Academy, he planned to establish a military force directly led by the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. After obtaining the consent of Sun Yat-sen, Zhou Enlai personally presided over the reorganization of the Armored Vehicle Team and planned to establish the "National Revolutionary Army's Marshal's Office Armored Vehicle Team."
Since August 1924, the armed Guangzhou commercial group launched a counter-revolutionary military rebellion in Guangzhou, seriously threatening the safety of the Marshal's Office. Sun Yat-sen decisively took measures and ordered the suppression of the rebellion. Zhou Enlai participated in commanding this suppression operation, and after this military action, Zhou Enlai accelerated the work of forming the Marshal's Office Armored Vehicle Team, and the reorganization was imperative.
In November 1924, the Marshal's Office Armored Vehicle Team began to be formed. Zhou Enlai personally selected Xu Chengzhang, a special officer from the Whampoa Military Academy, to serve as the captain of the Armored Vehicle Team, with the first graduates Zhou Shidi and Zhao Zixuan serving as deputy captain and military instructor, respectively.

Xu Chengzhang joined the Communist Party of China in 1923 and became the captain of the Armored Vehicle Team in 1924. In September 1927, when the Nanchang Uprising troops reached the Chaoshan area of Guangdong, Xu Chengzhang was instructed by the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China to work among the Hailufeng peasant army to support the uprising troops. After the uprising army was defeated, he served as the commander of the 24th Division. Zhou Shidi graduated from the first class of the Whampoa Military Academy and joined the Communist Party of China in 1924, serving successively as the deputy captain and captain of the Armored Vehicle Team, participating in the Northern Expedition.
The party representatives and political instructors of the Armored Vehicle Team were respectively appointed by Liao Qianwu and Cao Ruqian from the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. The Guangdong Provincial Committee mobilized a large number of workers, peasant self-defense team members, and young students as team members. The Armored Vehicle Team was established with 163 members. Except for a few, such as Mo Qibiao, Gao Chao, and Huang Huarang, who were transferred from the Marshal's Office guard team to serve as squad leaders and platoon leaders, the soldiers were mainly workers, common people, and young students. In early December 1924, the "National Revolutionary Army's Marshal's Office Armored Vehicle Team" was officially established.

The political training of the Armored Vehicle Team was mainly the responsibility of political instructor Cao Ruqian, and later Liao Qianwu, Xu Chengzhang, Zhou Shidi, and Zhao Zixuan also took on teaching tasks, holding two hours of political classes every day. The political education conducted by the Armored Vehicle Team was a new creation of the Communist Party of China in the military. The Armored Vehicle Team achieved remarkable military achievements in supporting the Guangning peasant movement, suppressing the Yunnan-Guangxi warlord rebellion, eliminating counter-revolutionary armed forces, and supporting the large strike in the province and port.
In November 1925, the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to establish the 34th Regiment of the 12th Division of the Fourth Army of the National Revolutionary Army based on the Armored Vehicle Team, with some students from the Whampoa Military Academy as the backbone, in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, which was later changed to the Independent Regiment of the Fourth Army (i.e., Ye Ting's Independent Regiment). Thus, the Armored Vehicle Team completed its historical mission.
Although the Armored Vehicle Team only existed for a year from its formation to reorganization, it played an irreplaceable role in the Communist Party's attempts to build armed forces, cultivate revolutionary combat backbones, and explore the practice of peasant and worker revolution.
