Introduction:
On May 12, 2008, at 14:28:04, a strong earthquake of magnitude 8 struck Wenchuan, Beichuan, Qingchuan, and other areas in Sichuan. The earthquake struck suddenly, shaking the southwestern region, displacing mountains and rivers, collapsing buildings, and destroying towns, resulting in a large number of casualties. This was the most destructive earthquake since the founding of New China, with the widest impact. The earthquake severely affected approximately 500,000 square kilometers of Chinese territory, with over 80,000 people tragically losing their lives.
After the earthquake, people across the country urgently engaged in rescue and disaster relief efforts. A certain anti-aircraft artillery regiment of the Jinan Military Region of the People's Liberation Army, upon receiving orders from higher authorities, quickly organized all officers and soldiers to enter the disaster area via air transport, searching for and rescuing victims from the rubble, opening rescue channels, and delivering disaster relief supplies to the affected areas in various ways, distributing the supplies in a timely manner, comforting the affected people, and building temporary housing for the disaster victims. The officers and soldiers also donated money and goods, establishing a Hope Primary School to allow children in the disaster area to return to school and resume their studies. The soldiers of the anti-aircraft artillery regiment fought tirelessly day and night on the earthquake front, deeply moving the affected communities. When the troops completed their mission and withdrew, the local people were reluctant to part ways, sending them off with tears.
This is the Earthquake Relief Commemorative Medal donated by the delegation of a certain anti-aircraft artillery regiment of the Jinan Military Region during their visit to the Nanchang August 1 Uprising Memorial Museum. It records the history of the regiment's officers and soldiers bravely fighting on the earthquake battlefield and is an important artifact commemorating the military and civilian efforts in earthquake relief after the 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake.
