The Red Star Medal is an award given to personnel of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army for their contributions. On July 9, 1933, the Central Revolutionary Military Commission of the Chinese Soviet Republic issued an order to award the Red Star Medal on the Army Day of August 1, to honor Red Army commanders and fighters with special merits.
The basic shape of the Red Star Medal features a star flower formed by two interlocking pentagrams, symbolizing the spark of revolution, with a circular pattern made of five stars and ears of grain in the center, representing that the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army is the army of the workers and peasants under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, serving wholeheartedly for the liberation of the workers and peasants. Between the pentagram and the ears of grain, the words 'Red Star Medal' are inscribed.
The medal is divided into three classes, according to regulations: the first class is awarded to personnel who have made special contributions to the leadership of the entire or part of the revolutionary war; the second class is awarded to personnel who have shifted the battle situation and achieved great victories in a certain campaign; the third class is awarded to personnel who have consistently demonstrated bravery and determination.
On July 11 of the same year, the temporary central government of the Chinese Soviet Republic also made a resolution: to award the Red Star Medal to 'the responsible comrades who led the Nanchang Uprising and the commanders and fighters in the Red Army with special merits.' Existing records indicate that the Red Star Medal was only awarded twice during the 'August 1' Army Day in 1933 and 1934. Those awarded the first class Red Star Medal include Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Peng Dehuai; those awarded the second class Red Star Medal include Chen Yi, Zhang Yunyi, Luo Ruiqing, Xiao Ke, He Changgong, Luo Binghui, Chen Bojun, Li Da, Li Juqu, Bi Zhanyun, Teng Daiyuan, Peng Shaohui, Wang Zheng, and 34 others; those awarded the third class Red Star Medal include Cheng Zihua, Wang Zhen, Li Tianyou, Yang Dezhi, Yang Yong, Su Zhenhua, and 53 others.
