In the summer of Nanchang, the weather is already very sultry. At Bayi Square, located in the city center, the crowd is bustling, presenting a lively scene. A group of elderly people dressed in traditional Chinese sportswear are holding a Mulan boxing competition here. Surrounding the square, huge balloons float in the air, and slogans such as "Coexist with nature, share love with the world" are everywhere. Black and white doves play and chase freely on the square's lawn, occasionally flapping their wings and soaring freely around the square.
It turns out that the first "Health Star" performance event for the elderly in Nanchang and the "First Urban Migratory Bird Festival in Nanchang" are simultaneously taking place in the large Bayi Square. However, groups of pedestrians are scattered around the square, some strolling through the woods, others resting on stone benches. Vendors selling watermelons and cold drinks enthusiastically greet customers.
Bayi Square was once one of the largest squares in China and is still the center for various activities for the people of Nanchang. During holidays, the people of Nanchang enjoy leisurely walks here and participate in various interesting activities. The square features the Bayi Nanchang Uprising Memorial Tower, which recreates the historical events of the uprising, making it a place for people to remember the heroes and engage in revolutionary education. The people of Nanchang seem to have a unique strong historical sentiment towards "Bayi"; many buildings, streets, schools, and shopping malls are named after "Bayi". In addition to Bayi Square, there are Bayi Avenue, Bayi Store, Bayi Middle School, Bayi Primary School, Bayi Park, Bayi Theater, and even children born here are named "Bayi", reflecting the simple people's pride in that glorious history.
In fact, Nanchang has been one of China's historical and cultural cities since ancient times. It was established as a county and city as early as 201 BC, and during the Western Han Dynasty, it was named Nanchang due to its reputation as a prosperous place in Jiangnan. On August 1, 1927, the Communist Party led an armed uprising here, firing the first shot against the Kuomintang, making it the place where the Communist Party's "flag was raised". Since then, this heroic city has been inextricably linked with "Bayi". To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party, the Jiangxi Provincial and Nanchang Municipal governments decided to organize performances by various mass organizations at Bayi Square starting from May 1, which will continue until after the "July 1" anniversary.
The director with the surname Xu, responsible for organizing the "Health Star" performance event, told reporters that when Bayi Square was first built, it was mainly used for large mass gatherings and commemorative activities as a political venue. With the progress of the times and the liberation of thoughts, people's concepts have quietly changed. The former podium of Bayi Square has now become a center for elderly activities; the "Long Live Pavilion" has been repurposed as the "Provincial Exhibition Center"; the square has transformed from a serious political activity venue into a lively cultural and leisure square for the public. As the reporter walked around the square, they found three large billboards in front of the memorial tower: "The East is Red at Sunrise", "Creating a New Era", and "Marching Towards the 21st Century", featuring portraits of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin, the core leaders of the three generations of the Communist Party. Director Xu said that in the past, the square only had pure political slogans and public service advertisements, but now, a dazzling array of commercial giant advertisements can be seen everywhere, indicating that the place where the revolution began is now also surging with the tide of the market economy.
