Recently, Grandpa Sun Lin, who experienced the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, shared his stories from that time. Grandpa Sun is 94 years old. In October 1950, just after graduating from the Fourth Aviation School in Shenyang, he joined the Chinese Air Force and went to the battlefield of the Korean War. General Wang Hai, who passed away in August 2020, was the commander of the Air Force at that time and was the captain of the 1st Squadron of the 9th Regiment of the 3rd Air Division, where Sun Lin served. The "Wang Hai Squadron," led by Wang Hai, fought over 80 battles against the U.S. Air Force, known as the "world's ace," shooting down or damaging 29 enemy aircraft, becoming a true ace squadron. And Sun Lin was the "doctor" for these ace planes.
The air force unit where Grandpa Sun served was responsible for guarding the Yalu River Bridge and transportation lines. As the equipment mechanic chief, he was responsible for maintaining 8 aircraft.
He recalled the situation back then: "When I was studying at the aviation school, there were no planes, just theoretical classes. Later, we got to see a broken plane. A Soviet mechanic and two mechanics came with our mechanic and two mechanics, and they stayed with us for a few months, then went to the battlefield. After we learned, they handed the plane over to us and left. It mainly relied on later practical operations."
The famous "Wang Hai Squadron" is named after pilot Wang Hai. What legendary stories does this squadron have?
In late October 1951, according to the unified deployment of the Volunteer Army Air Force, the 1st Squadron of the 9th Regiment of the 3rd Air Division, led by Captain Wang Hai, flew to the smoke-filled battlefield of Korea, shouldering the expectations of the Party and the people of the motherland. The pilots of the 1st Squadron came from the army. Although they had fought with the enemy in the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, they were still "elementary students" in flying skills. They had only trained for a few dozen hours on jet fighters and had never even shot at a target in the air. In the battle on November 9, the pilots of the 1st Squadron unexpectedly encountered enemy aircraft and, after a fierce dogfight, shot down an enemy bomber, achieving a good start for the 1st Squadron.
On November 18, the 1st Squadron led by Wang Hai faced another opportunity for battle. Around 2 PM that day, the front-line radar of the Volunteer Army detected American planes, with 9 batches of 184 aircraft, bombing and strafing our railway targets. Around 2:30 PM, the 9th Regiment of the 3rd Air Division was ordered to launch 16 MiG-15 fighters to confront them. Wang Hai also led 6 aircraft from the 1st Squadron to the combat area. As the planes approached the Qingchuan River Bridge, he saw over 50 aircraft diving to bomb the bridge. With Wang Hai's command, the 6 planes of the Volunteer Army began their attack. The enemy, relying on their numerical superiority, surrounded Wang Hai and his squadron. To avoid being passively attacked, Wang Hai commanded his planes to climb quickly and break free from the enemy's encirclement, then dove down to attack. Wang Hai opened fire on an enemy aircraft from a distance of 500 meters, shooting down an F-84. His wingman, Jiao Jingwen, covered him and shot down another F-84 that was preparing to ambush Wang Hai. After that, the two closely coordinated and shot down another enemy aircraft. In a short time, over 60 enemy aircraft were fiercely attacked by the 6 planes of the 1st Squadron, causing panic and scattering in all directions. In the later stages, the "Wang Hai Squadron" shot down even more enemy aircraft.
The People's Air Force grew and developed during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea. By the end of 1953, it had expanded to 28 divisions and 70 regiments, with over 3,000 various aircraft, forming a strong aerial force composed of various aviation troops. The People's Air Force also developed the famous "air knife-fighting spirit" on the battlefield of the Korean War, creating miracles in the history of aerial combat worldwide.
