In a large glass display case in the new exhibition hall of the August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum, two cultural relics (see photo) are displayed: a receipt and a reply letter. These two relics document a little-known detail of the grand historical event of the August 1st Uprising and are directly related to the financial work of the uprising.
First, let’s take a closer look at their appearance. Both relics are made of paper, measuring 307 mm in height and 209 mm in length; they have eight vertical lines of blank spaces in the middle, which is a traditional "eight-line note." The difference is that above the blank spaces, the words "Prime Minister's Will" are printed in larger letters, along with the full text of Sun Yat-sen's will in smaller print. Between the Prime Minister's will and the blank spaces, it reads "Chinese Nationalist Party Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee Common Note" in right-to-left print. On the right side outside the blank spaces, it reads "The revolution has not yet succeeded, comrades still need to work hard," and on the left side outside, it reads "Tighten the party's organization, enhance the party's authority." All the text and blank spaces are printed in red ink.
The receipt is written in brush pen: "Today, we have received a donation of ten thousand yuan from your association to comfort the revolutionary soldiers, hereby addressed to the Jiangxi People's Committee to comfort the revolutionary soldiers at the front, signed on August 3, and stamped with the square seal of the Jiangxi Provincial Executive Committee of the Chinese Nationalist Party (then referred to as the Guan Fang)."
The reply letter contains more text: "The undersigned received the comfort donation from your association yesterday, which has been delivered by our committee members Huang Daoluo and Shi Bing to the political directors of the 11th Army and the 20th Army for distribution. This is to inform you, hereby addressed to the Jiangxi People's Committee to comfort the revolutionary soldiers at the front, signed by the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee on August 4, and also stamped with the same square seal as the receipt."
These two cultural relics document a historical episode: After the victory of the August 1st Uprising, a leftist mass organization called the Jiangxi People's Committee to Comfort the Revolutionary Soldiers donated ten thousand silver dollars to the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee of the Nationalist Party on August 3. At that time, the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee was a Kuomintang-Communist cooperative organization centered around Communist Party members. The person handling the donation was Zhu Dazhen, a leftist figure in the Nationalist Party, who was likely the head of the committee. The person receiving the donation was Luo Shibing, one of the leaders of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party, who had served as an executive committee member, standing committee member, and propaganda minister of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee of the Nationalist Party. After receiving the donation, Luo Shibing immediately delivered the money to the political directors of Ye Ting's 11th Army and He Long's 20th Army. The next day, on August 4, Luo Shibing wrote a letter to Zhu Dazhen to inform him of the donation's whereabouts. Zhu Dazhen kept the receipt and the reply letter safe. In the mid-1950s, when the city of Nanchang was preparing to establish the August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum, the preparatory staff contacted Zhu Dazhen to learn about the history of the uprising, and he presented the reply letter and receipt, introducing this matter to the visiting staff. Later, he donated these two cultural relics to the August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum.
In 1994, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage organized experts to come to Nanchang, and after identifying the receipt and reply letter, they confirmed them as first-class cultural relics. Now, they quietly stand there, silently telling the history of the past. They reflect the enthusiasm of the people of Nanchang in supporting the August 1st Uprising army, demonstrate the meticulous and responsible work style of party members and cadres, and indirectly reflect a source of funding for the August 1st Uprising. If you have the opportunity to visit the August 1st Uprising Memorial Museum next time, don’t forget to take a good look at their appearance.
